Frage: Is Paukendrainage recommended without having trouble middle ear infection

Dear Doctor Busse, My son is 2Y4M old. When he was 2 he did not speak a single word, so our "Kinderarzt" prescribed speech/ear test to HNO/ENT. He also doubted that since my son goes to Krippe where he hears German and at home English, this might be a reason for his speech delay. - We got an appointment in "Uniklinikum" when he was 2Y2M old and just before the appointment he had bronchitis. During test the doctor noticed fluid in his year, recommended us to use nose spray (Otriven, 0.5%) and asked us to come after a month. - Unfortunately, a week before his second appointment he had cold (running nose). The doctor again noticed the fluid and this time recommend us OP for Paukendrainage. - Meanwhile between 2Y till 2Y4M my son has shown improvement in speaking. He has added almost 50 words in his vocab. - He had ear infection only once and that was painless. He did not show symptoms of pain in ear at any time. But yes, earlier (before 2Y) he used to put his finger in ear or scratch outside surface of ear. He almost never had problem with sneezing. What would you recommend? How can we make sure that the operation is necessary? We are completely confused. Shall we wait and let his ear tested again? Kind regards, Sudhir PS: Please excuse me for writing in English as I am not a native-speaker and want to be precise while explaining medical problem on the forum. You may answer in German.

Dear S., from what you describe, your son seems to be a typical "late talker" and the fact,. that he aquires many new words in the last weeks, speeks against him having a severe hearing problem. So there ist at least no hurry for any specific therapy. I would recommend to just wait and let the Kinderarzt check his speech development in 3 months. All the best!
